Grassington OO (Refurbished for the 2010 Grassington Festival in 19/20th June 2010)

History.
When the Midland built the Grassington Branch from Embsay Junction, their
intention was to carry on right through to Wensleydale to link the North
Eastern's cross country line from Garsdale on the Settle-Carlisle to
Northallerton on the East Coast main line. However, the branch never got further
than Grassington (that is until Bradford M.R.C. got involved!), so here is the
Grassington Branch Extension as it might have been in the late 50's to early
60's.It is interesting that even though it was a terminal station it was
constructed as a through station with 2 platforms and a trailing rather
than facing crossover for the loco run-round.
The station opened in 1904.
Regular passenger services ceased early in 1932 due to bus although goods and
quarry traffic continued until 1969. Only the 3 arch bridge at the south of the
layout and the Former Baxters shop at the north end survive.

Layout
The layout was built between two already existing fiddle yards and a
90° curved non-scenic board, which needed only slight modification plus the
scenic treatment. The station and goods yard follow the prototype track plan,
although a certain degree of condensation in length has been necessary to get a
manageable size.
After some years in store the layout has been resurrected
for the 2010 Grassington festival and has been reconfigured as an end to end
between 2 fiddle yards and given a general refresh.
The track disappearing under the wooden footbridge leads to Skirethornes
quarry from where stone was transported for roadway construction.

Extension
As for the extension northwards, the line on leaving the station (which was
the terminus) crosses the main road between Threshfield and Grassington on the
level, and passes by the well-known Baxter's Confectioners shop.
Speculation
was that had the line been extended, this shop would possibly have been
demolished - however on examining O.S. maps and researching the actual area, we
believe that the single line could have passed by the shop without any need for
such measures. This shop has therefore been modelled more or less as it was in
the chosen period. With the signal box controlling most of the station
pointwork located at the other end of the platforms how the crossing would have
be worked is a source of some speculation - what do you think? As the extension
is supposed to join the NE Region line in Wensleydale, locos and stock from both
North Eastern and Midland regions will be seen working on the line.

Victoria
Road 00 Victoria Road featured in the December 2008 issue of
Hornby magazine
Bradford Model Railway Club's latest large exhibition
layout based on Saltairs stationa nd mill. A cup
winner at the 2008 Workington and Stockport shows as well as appearing in our 2005,6 and 2008
shows. Due to appear in our 2010 show.
Victoria Rd. is based on a section of the ex Midland
line north from Leeds/Bradford heading towards the famous Settle & Carlisle.
Many of the buildings and scenery are modelled on those at Saltaire but because
of the constraints of size and space we have
renamed it after the road which crosses the line between the station and the
mill. Many local people will no doubt recognise the features and
hopefully get the atmosphere of the area. Buildings to "spot" include Salts mill
(Condensed, Titus's mausoleum on the side of Victoria Church, The Staff Canteen
and Shipley Salvation Army.
The period modelled
was intended to be in the 1960s and much of the stock will be run for this time.
However it has been know that Victoria Rd. can be caught up in a 50 year
time warp where the stock can appear from a much later period.
A time when passenger trains run without locos, freight trains have all lost their brake vans and railway stations have gone in favour of train stations:- sad isn’t it?Designed by Chairman Donald Swires and constructed mainly by himself and Exhibition manager Keith Fell. Latterly Chris Towers has used his talents to enhance the Scenery. The layout is based on Saltaire station and goods adjacent to Salts mill around 1920-1960.
Baseboards are 12mm ply on pine frames, scenery mainly Woodland
Scenics and trackwork is Peco code 100. Control is conventional cab
control with a up to 5 controllers.
The 12 road fiddling yard is designed so that different front layouts can be
used.
Type = Continuous double
track with station and small yard, rear multiroad fiddleyard operators in
centre. Front view only.
Front 6 4ft by 2ft 6 boards. Fiddle yard 4
boards*4ft by 2ft6" and 1 board 5ft by 2ft 6" with two 18" by 5ft 6" end boards.

Oxenhope
is the terminus station of the now preserved Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. We
have tried to base model loosely as it was between 1945 and 1965 which permits
the running of both L.M.S. and B.R. stock.
It consists of a single platform
with run-round loop and goods facilities. As a point of interest, when the
branch was built the structures and track bed were constructed to double track
standards to allow an extension via a long tunnel to Hebden Bridge. Of course,
this was never constructed.
Construction - The
scenery is Woodlands Scenic flock on polystyrene sheets laid on 7mm ply
baseboards.
Buildings are scratch built complete with furnished interiors
the station and goods shed having working smoke units. For added interest we
have tried to incorporate some period vehicles as well as some local wildlife.
The single fiddle yard can hold up to six full length trains.
Stock
belongs
to club members and includes Bachman, Tower; Oakville-Anchorage; Connoisseur,
DJH, Slater's, and some scratch built

ASHTOM is a little known intermediate station on the coastal branch line on
the Isle of Sodor. So little known that hardly anyone has heard of it, even
Tomas gets mixed up when he is sent there.
You’re not likely to see the Fat Controller at ASHTOM so anything
goes and quite a lot STOPS.
The only visible industry is the Sodor Kipper
Company, which was built after the first catch of smoked kippers, was landed
on the quay on the 1st April 1900 and something or other. So much for the
serious stuff. So - the layout
was built with our younger visitors in mind and they are invited to take the
controls and have a go...---
Anyone get the anagram?
Size Total Length = 6ft (1.8m) ; Viewing Length=6ft, ; Depth=4t

Dewsbury Midland N (Currently being refurbished available in 2011 )
N gauge layout derived from Arthur Whitehead's original idea of the
same name.
Dewsbury Midland was inspired by an Arthur Whitehead article of the same name from the December 1973 edition of Railway Modeller. It supposed that the Midland's proposed line from Royston through to the North HAD been built with Dewsbury the junction which would have formed, had further proposals materialised.
The layout takes the form of an oval, but whereas Arthur Whiteheads was designed on an
area of 11' x 9' in 4mm/ft, ours has been stretched to 14' x 13' in 2mm/ft,
giving a much more spacious look to the station and running lines.
A 4mm version also based on the Arthur Whitehead article has been constructed by
Manchetser Model railway club.
A Loco shed has been added for loco and roster changes.
The track is Peco throughout with points operating via a Capacitor Discharge unit and probe onto studs let into a mimic diagram on the control panel. The separate up and down fiddle yard roads are selected through a diode matrix system. There are separate controls for up and down main lines as well as those for the loco shed area and goods facilities.
Buildings within the confines of the railway are mostly scratch built to the Midland architectural style whilst others are kit built items. The back scene was all hand painted by one of our ex-members Norman Carter and was developed from photographs taken in the actual area - a masterpiece in 2mm - many thanks to Norman for this, some other railway buildings and the garden centre which occupies the land where the cricket ground used to be.
The time period has been brought forward in to the B.R. steam / diesel era but locos and stock from earlier days may be seen as well as inter-regional exchanges.
